Most "broken locks" on the island are not broken locks
Okaloosa Island Lock Repair exists for one question: this thing is not working properly, do I fix it or replace it? Answering that honestly means looking at the whole opening — the door, the frame, the hinges, the strike and the hardware — rather than at the lock alone.
A large share of the calls we get described as a failed lock are actually a failed door. The lock is fine. The bolt is fine. The problem is that the bolt and the hole it is supposed to go into are no longer in the same place. That happens constantly in this climate, and no amount of new hardware fixes it.
So the first thing to do is a test anyone can run in thirty seconds. Open the door fully. Now operate the lock with the door standing open. If the bolt throws smoothly, retracts cleanly, and the handle feels normal, the lock mechanism is healthy and your problem is alignment. If it grinds, sticks, or feels gritty with the door open and nothing pressing on it, the fault is inside the hardware. That single test separates the two families of repair.
Family one: alignment, and why it happens here
Wood absorbs moisture and swells. Humidity on a barrier island is high year-round and spikes in the warm months, so a timber door that fitted perfectly in February can bind in August and come right again in the winter. Owners often describe this as the lock "getting worse and then better", which is a strong clue that the hardware was never the issue.
Hinges are the other half. Screws in a hinge carry the entire weight of the slab, and over years — accelerated by doors that get pulled hard, slammed by wind, or hung on frames that have taken moisture — the top hinge screws work loose and the door drops at the latch edge. Now the latch bolt arrives below the strike plate opening and has to be lifted into place, which is why people find themselves pulling up on the handle to lock the door. That pulling is a symptom, and continuing to do it grinds the bolt tip and the strike lip until one of them deforms.
Wind matters too. Doors that face open water get pushed and pulled by gusts, and a door that is habitually slammed by wind loosens its own hinges faster than one in a sheltered breezeway.
The repairs are unglamorous and durable. Longer screws through the top hinge into the framing behind the jamb will lift a dropped door back into line more often than any other single fix. Beyond that: adjusting or relocating the strike plate, filing the strike opening where the movement is small, shimming a hinge leaf to change how the door sits, and easing the edge of the slab where swelling has closed the gap. When a deadbolt is the one binding, the cause is usually that the bolt hole in the jamb was never drilled deep enough and the bolt has been bottoming out for years.
Weatherstripping deserves a mention because compressed or hardened seals change how far the door closes, and a seal that has gone stiff can hold the door a few millimetres proud of where the bolt expects it. Replacing a perished seal sometimes fixes a lock complaint entirely.
Family two: what actually fails inside the hardware
When the mechanism itself is at fault, the failures fall into a short list.
Springs. Inside a latch there is a spring cassette that returns the handle to horizontal and pushes the bolt back out. Inside a cylinder there are small springs behind each pin. These are the least durable parts of any lock and they are steel, which means salt is their enemy. A handle that droops and no longer springs back is a failed latch spring. A key that goes in and turns but will not return, or that turns with a mushy inconsistent feel, is often failed pin springs.
Corrosion in the keyway. Salt aerosol enters through the only permanent opening in the lock — the slot you put the key in. It settles on the pins and the chambers. The progression is predictable: a key that needs wiggling, then a key that only works from one angle, then a key that will not turn, then a key that snaps. Once the corrosion has pitted the pin chambers, cleaning buys time but does not restore the lock.
Debris. Sand is abrasive and it is everywhere here. It gets carried into a keyway on the key itself, in pockets, in beach bags. Grit in a cylinder acts like grinding paste, wearing the pins and the key together until neither matches the original specification. This is the mechanism behind a common complaint — "my key stopped working but the spare is fine". The spare is fine because it was in a drawer; the everyday key has been sanded down.
Plating and finish failure. This one is cosmetic until it is not. Coastal air blooms and lifts the plating on lever handles, escutcheons and cylinder faces. Where the finish lifts, the base metal underneath oxidises, and on a lever handle the corrosion eventually reaches the spindle and the mechanism. A handle that has gone chalky and rough is telling you the exterior hardware is at the end of its service life even if it still turns.
Loose fixings. Through-bolts back off over time. A lock that has developed play, where the whole exterior escutcheon rocks when you turn the key, is often just loose — and it is a repair that takes minutes but that, left alone, lets the mechanism wear itself out of alignment internally.
Repair or replace: how we actually decide
We repair when the failure is a discrete part in an otherwise sound assembly, when replacement parts for that assembly are still obtainable, and when the hardware is a grade worth keeping. Loose fixings, a worn strike, a failed spring cassette in a good-quality latch, a thumbturn that has gone slack, a cylinder that is dirty rather than pitted — all repairable, all cheaper than replacement.
We replace when corrosion has reached the point that any repair is temporary. That is the honest test: if we clean and re-pin this cylinder, is it going to be back to the same state within a season? On exposed doors facing the water, frequently yes. Rebuilding a cylinder whose springs are already rusting is charging for a repair we know will fail, and we would rather quote the replacement.
We also replace when the hardware was inadequate to begin with. A hollow decorative deadbolt with a short throw on a unit's only exterior door is not something to nurse along. And we replace when parts no longer exist, which is common with older or discontinued lines.
There is a middle route that suits a lot of island units: keep the handle set and trim, replace only the exposed cylinder with a new one, and leave the interior side alone. It restores function and appearance on the weather-facing part without changing the look of the door or the cost of a full set.
Choosing replacement hardware that survives here
If you are replacing anyway, the choice you make now decides whether you are doing this again in three years.
Judge the finish as carefully as the mechanism. Thin decorative plating over a soft base metal is the fastest thing to fail in salt air, and it fails visibly. Solid materials and finishes specified for coastal or marine exposure cost more up front and last disproportionately longer on a door that faces open water.
Judge the grade honestly. Hardware is graded for cycles and for force resistance, and there is a real gap between the lightest builder-grade product and something rated for heavier duty. On a unit that is rented, every door is being operated by strangers who do not treat it gently, and cycle count matters more than it would in a private home.
Match what you already have where it matters. Backset — the distance from the door edge to the centre of the bore — comes in two common sizes, and buying the wrong one means the new lock does not line up with the existing holes. Handing matters on lever sets. Bore diameter matters. This is the most common reason a self-installed replacement does not fit, and the reason we ask you to read us what is stamped on the existing lock before we bring parts.
Think about the whole door rather than one item. Replacing a deadbolt while leaving a corroded latch below it means being back for the latch shortly afterwards, and it means the two will not be on the same key unless somebody plans for that.
Maintenance that genuinely extends the life of a lock here
Use the right lubricant. A dry film or graphite product intended for locks. Do not put general-purpose penetrating oil into a keyway — it feels like an improvement for a couple of weeks, then it holds sand and salt against the pins and the lock ends up worse than it started. This is the single most common piece of self-inflicted damage we see.
Rinse exposed hardware with fresh water occasionally and dry it. Salt that is washed off is salt that is not sitting on the finish. It is a small habit and it visibly slows plating failure on doors facing the water.
Do not use the key as a handle. Turning a key to pull a door closed, or using it to lever a sticking door, is how blades fatigue and snap.
Act at the first symptom. A key that needs a wiggle is a cheap job. The same lock four months later, seized or with a snapped blade inside it, is an expensive one. Nobody calls at the wiggle stage, and everybody should.
Check the hinge screws once a year. Thirty seconds with a screwdriver on the top hinge prevents the slow drop that causes most alignment complaints.
What to tell us when you call
Run the door-open test first and tell us the result — it is the most useful single fact you can give us. Tell us whether the trouble is a key that will not turn, a handle that will not spring back, a bolt that will not throw, or a door that will not close. Tell us whether it is intermittent or constant, and whether it changes with the weather. Read us the brand stamped on the lock face. Tell us how many doors are affected, and whether the door faces the water.
If a key has snapped off in the lock, leave it alone until we get there. Glue, pliers and pushing the stub deeper are the three things that turn an extraction into a cylinder replacement.
Common questions
My key works in one lock and not the other, and they used to match. Almost always wear. The everyday key has been abraded and the everyday lock has worn with it, so the pair still works together but no longer matches the original specification. Cutting a fresh key from the code fixes it.
The lock is fine in winter and sticks in summer. That is swelling and alignment, not the lock. Adjust the strike and check the hinges.
Can a corroded lock be cleaned rather than replaced? If the corrosion is surface deposit, yes. If the pin chambers are pitted and the springs have lost tension, cleaning is a temporary result and we will say so rather than sell it to you.
Is it worth repairing an old lock nobody makes parts for? Occasionally, when the hardware is unusual and matters to the look of the door. Usually not.
The handle turns but nothing happens. That is a broken spindle or a stripped internal drive. It is a mechanism failure and the lock body needs to come off.
Do I need to be there? For an exterior door on an occupied unit, yes, or someone authorised does. We do not work on a door on the say-so of whoever happens to be standing next to it.
